Tools

The tools presented below represent a portion of the tools available for the climate, agriculture and forestry sectors. The tools range from specialized calculators to maps, models and datasets estimating a variety of outputs (e.g., crop production, greenhouse gas flux, and species distribution). Certain tools may be more relevant to land managers to aid in year-to-year decision-making, while others are more useful for researchers studying agriculture and climate change. Keep in mind that all tools have limitations and make assumptions that may not be appropriate for an entity’s climate/region/crop/soil type. USDA does not endorse the tools presented below. The tool list is provided for informational purposes only, and is not exhaustive.
  • Cover Crop Nitrogen Calculator (CC-NCALC)

A no-till farmer and he terminates the cover crops with a roller crimper after planting. The cover crops are made up of a diverse 12 seed mix.

To provide farmers and land managers with a science-based decision support tool to estimate cover crop nitrogen release and additional fertilizer requirements based on a given farmer’s soils, climate, and crop…

  • Cover Crop Species Selector

In addition to improving soil health and reducing erosion, cover crops provide habitat for pollinators.

To provide farmers and land managers with a science-based decision support tool to assist with cover crop species selection based on a given farmer’s soils, climate, and crop management goals.

  • Global Farm Animals Ration Programs

GlobalFARP can help small-scale producers by offering ration programs in their local languages and optimizing least cost rations using their local feeds and at the same time helping to mitigate methane emissions.
